cortical pyramidal cells are characterized by different structure among cortices. In the ventral visual pathway of adult primates, dendrites of pyramidal cells become more branched and spinous with anterior progression through cortical areas (V1, V2, V4, TEO and TE). Here we investigated how these specializations in dendritic structure develop by examining the morphology of layer III pyramidal cells in these five areas of monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) ranging from 2-day old to 4.5-year old. In all areas, spine density reached the maximum at three and half months of age, and then declined. Analyses of the total number of spines revealed that neurons in V1, V2 and V4 pruned more spines than they grew from birth to adulthood. In contrast, neurons in TEO and TE grew more spines than they pruned from birth to adulthood. Thus, layer III pyramidal neurons in lower cortical areas and those in higher order association areas exhibit different developmental profiles.
