Low-pass and high-pass spatial-frequency filtering can differentially emphasize the global configuration of the face and fine details of the facial features, respectively. We exploited this effect to examine the neural mechanisms underlying face recognition. If the neural representation of a face in higher visual cortices is object-based, as suggested from psychological studies, then neuronal responses should depend on cycles per image (image-based spatial frequency) and not on cycles per degree of visual angle (retina-based spatial frequency). Here we examined whether face responsive neurons in the temporal visual cortex of monkeys show image-based spatial frequency tuning by assessing the dependency of spatial frequency tuning for face images on retinal image size. Although recorded neurons showed a wide variety of dependency on retinal size, the neurons as a whole were tuned to image-based spatial frequency rather than retina-based spatial frequency.
